Hello! Thank you for visiting. I'm currently a feature writer at New York Magazine. Before that, I was at ProPublica covering California and climate. And before that, I was a longtime writer-at-large for the New York Times Magazine. I also teach at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism.

My magazine work has won an Emmy, an Oakes Award, and been a finalist several times for National Magazine Awards. It’s been anthologized in Best American Sports Writing, Best American Food Writing, and America’s Next Generation of Great Women Journalists.

My most recent book, The Girl Who Smiled Beads, was a New York Times bestseller. I live in San Francisco with my partner, the writer Daniel Duane, and (when we’re lucky) our two young-adult daughters.
